The snake was as small as him ,but it remains a snake he could have died it was just the mercy of God.

 It was God's protection because at 1 year the baby cannot know the snake

I some times wonder why snakes spare children and become tough with big person?

I think the kind of snake he bit was not so dangerous otherwise it would have killed him.
